Creative Halloween Decor with NaturStrohhalme: Have You Thought of This Yet?

NaturStrohhalme banner: creative Halloween cocktail decor with coloured straws

For many bars and restaurants, Halloween is the one time of year when decor matters more than usual. Pumpkins show up at the entrance, cobwebs go up on the ceiling, and the cocktail menu gets a spooky rename. One detail almost always gets skipped, though: the straw in the glass. The guest holds it right before they drink, and it often ends up in the photo.

That’s where a simple opportunity sits. NaturStrohhalme come in four colours made from real ingredients, with no artificial dyes. For the Halloween season, that opens up more room to play than you might expect, and very little changes behind the bar. You just swap the straw in the same glass.

Four Halloween cocktails with white, green, yellow and red straws

Colour as the mood-setter

Each colour carries its own association, no plastic spiders required:

  • Red (beetroot): reads as blood, a natural fit for dark rum or whiskey drinks like a “Vampire’s Kiss” or a “Blood Moon”.
  • Green (pandan leaf): has a faintly toxic, mystical feel, perfect for a “Witch’s Brew” or a Frankenstein-style highball.
  • Yellow (turmeric): calls to mind pumpkins and lanterns, a good match for spiced rum drinks or a Pumpkin Sour.
  • White (natural): for the toned-down version, a ghost in the glass.

The Halloween atmosphere comes from the glass itself, not from extra decor that ends up in the bin the next day.

Ideas for the Halloween cocktail bar

A few ideas that don’t take much effort to pull off:

  • Give each of the season’s signature drinks its own straw colour. Guests will recognise the drink by the glass alone.
  • Print a small icon per colour on the menu, so the pairing is visible there too.
  • Combine several colours in one glass, for layered drinks or a cold punch bowl for groups.
  • Skip the bat picks and plastic spiders and let the straw colour carry the theme.

You can extend the idea to themed nights or private Halloween bookings, too. If you offer packages for groups, mention the straw colour as a small extra at the time of booking. A detail people hear about beforehand tends to land even better on the night itself.

Small change, but exactly the kind of detail that ends up on social media.

What still matters behind the scenes

As much as the look comes first, what’s underneath still matters for the business. NaturStrohhalme are tested against EU food contact requirements, carry the V-Label and are gluten-free, so they’re also suitable for guests with coeliac disease. They’re made from 57 % tapioca starch and 42 % arrowroot flour with 1 % natural colour, and the white straw from 57 % tapioca starch and 43 % arrowroot flour. They have no coating, which rules out the typical PFAS source found in coated paper straws.

The straws are flavour-neutral and hold their shape for up to two hours in cold drinks. As a single-use product they need no cleaning, so there’s no washing up at the end of the shift. Where the straw goes afterwards is set by your waste contractor.

Finding the right size

Not every drink needs the same straw. For reference:

Size Recommended for
Ø 6 × 200 mm Long drinks, spritz, light cocktails
Ø 8 × 200 mm Sours, fruit-forward cocktails
Ø 8 × 150 mm Cocktails with crushed ice, caipirinhas
Ø 12 × 200 mm Frozen drinks, shakes, smoothie cocktails

Ø 8 × 200 mm is our most-ordered size in hospitality and a solid starting point if you haven’t settled on one for the season yet.

From Halloween night to a permanent spot on the bar

Over 95 % of our orders come from hospitality businesses that reorder roughly every three months. An occasion like Halloween is a good moment to try coloured straws for the first time. After that, other occasions come up quickly: New Year’s Eve with sparkling cocktails, summer terraces with Aperol, private parties with their own theme. The straw stays the same, only the occasion changes.

Sometimes the best trick is simply giving guests a good detail without them noticing how much thought went into it.
